LAUREN HARB HAREM MODERN

Harem Modern started as a place to sell my favorite modern and postmodern furniture and objects, but by fall of 2019, it naturally shifted into being an online Moroccan rug destination. In 2017, I visited Morocco for the first time and came home with 7 rugs—6 more than I needed for my one bedroom apartment. Once I accepted that I didn’t have the room to keep my new treasures, I began selling them off to friends and acquaintances. Before long, I partnered with several women’s cooperatives and wholesalers throughout Morocco and the business transitioned to (almost) strictly rugs. I recently learned my grandfather also sold rugs in his homeland of Palestine, and it clicked for me why selling rugs has felt so natural—it’s in my blood. Helping your spaces feel more like homes, supporting Berber women in their highly skilled craft of making handmade rugs, and connecting you to the beautiful works of art that are these rugs has become so much more than work for me. It’s a passion—and I thank you for supporting me in doing what I love.

Our Rugs:

All of our rugs are made by hand in Morocco, with the exception of a small part of the Harem House line which is made by hand in India by a family of weavers who have been in business for several generations. We carry a mix of vintage and new rugs, and we also offer the ability to custom order your ideal design. Both new and custom rugs are handmade by native Amazigh women in women’s cooperatives in Morocco. Additionally, most of our rugs ship directly from Morocco, but a small selection will be available for local pickup in Los Angeles at any given time.
