Harem Modern Morocco Camel

Here are some common questions we get asked. If you don't find your answer here, feel free to email us.

FAQs

Where are you based?
The Harem is based in Los Angeles, California. We do business with several wholesalers and women's cooperatives in Morocco, and our rugs ship out from both Los Angeles and Morocco.

Do you have a storefront?
Not quite. We are mostly online but a select few rugs and floor poufs are available to shop out of the Harem locally in Los Angeles.

Can I see the rugs in person?

Most of our rugs ship directly from Morocco, and cannot be viewed in person. However, if you are in Los Angeles, make an appointment to visit the Harem and browse the small selection of rugs we keep in stock.

Can I customize a rug with a design I don't see on the website?

Absolutely. If you want something other than what you see, send us an email and we'll start the customization process.

How long does it take to make a custom rug?

Remember that making beautiful, high-quality rugs by hand takes time--expect it take about 10-12 weeks, not including the 7-10 days for delivery. In the winter, anticipate an additional 1-2 weeks as wet weather slows down the crucial drying process. If you're in a rush, send us a message and we'll do our best to expedite your order.

What is the quality level of the custom rugs?

We take a lot of pride in making only the highest quality rugs using the best available wool. With proper care, these rugs will last decades.

How much does shipping cost?

If you are in the US or Europe, shipping is free. If you're outside of the US or Europe, shipping will be calculated at checkout. If you don't see your location at check out, send us a message and we'll get you a quote.

How do I care for my Moroccan rug?

Proper care is critical to your rug's lifespan. In fact, cleaning it often will preserve your rug much longer than avoiding high traffic. This is because when dirt accumulates, it can shred the wool fibers and cause degeneration in the long term. As long as you care for your rug properly, it will last you for years and years to come.

If it's feasible to do so, we recommend cleaning your rug about once a week by shaking it out outside (you can also beat it with a stick when you do this). If the rug is huge, the weather is uncooperative, or there's some other reason shaking it out isn't realistic, then vacuum weekly from side to side. Avoid vacuuming long-ways from end to end, keep the beater bar on the highest setting, and you should be good to go. It's also a good idea to have it professionally cleaned every few years, particularly if it's in a high traffic area or your rug has endured some staining over time.

For removing stains or spot cleaning, we recommend you use warm water and a small amount of detergent.

What material is used to make the rugs?

Except where noted, most of the rugs we carry are made from 100% Moroccan sheep wool. Occasionally we carry rugs made from recycled textiles or cactus silk. Additionally, some of the rugs in our houseline are handmade in India using high quality wool or bamboo silk.

Refunds & Exchanges

Due to the high cost of shipping, all orders are final and we cannot accept returns. If placing a custom order, please confirm all details are correct before finalizing your order--this includes measurements, colors, and design.  Once an order is placed, your product is packed up and ready to ship by the next business day. For custom orders, the handweaving begins the next business day and you will be responsible for the full cost of the rug if you have a change of heart after they begin. For these reasons, it's really important you feel sure before placing an order. Our hope is that you are 100% satisfied with your order. This is why you can contact us to ask any questions you might have before you place an order. We are happy to help you select the right product for you, and available to answer any questions you have. We also ask that you keep in mind these rugs are 100% handmade, which means each piece is unique in color and design. This is part of what makes them so special in our opinion, and we hope you appreciate that, too.

Where are the rugs made?

The vast majority are made in the middle Atlas of Morocco in a women's cooperative. A very small selection of the Harem house line rugs are made by a family of weavers in India who have been making rugs for generations.
